Matthew 7:15-23 “Are You the Real Deal?”

I was thinking the other day in my office how many books I have read of sermons. How many books of sermons have I got, and how many sermons are in each book. I’d estimate that my library has around 4,000 books. There are around 50,000 sermons on my shelves. That’s a lot of sermons! The sermon on the mount is an insight into the preaching of the greatest preacher of all, the Lord Jesus Christ. It tells us what He meant when after His baptism Matt 4:17 From then on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, because the kingdom of heaven has come near!” In many ways, the sermon on the mount ends in verse 12 of chapter 7. The commentators tell us that from verse 13 to the end of the chapter is the Lord Jesus’ appeal. He is giving an appeal like a an evangelistic service, where the evangelist will give reasons why a person should surrender their lives to the Lord Jesus Christ. Have you entered through the narrow gate? (Matthew 7:13-14)
No other Saviour –(John 14:6) No baggage – we need to give up our sin and relinquish it in order to follow Jesus (John 8:1-11). No life of ease –we need to live a life of obedience even if that calls for a challenge. (Matthew 8:18-22)
Every man then, every woman, every young person stands at a crossroads, to the right is the narrow gate, the narrow way that leads to life, to the left is the broad way, broad road that leads to damnation, both are marked heaven, one is true and one is a lie. Standing in front of those two gates, as you stand at that crossroads are false prophets doing everything they can in their power to push you the wrong way. They’re there, obscuring the narrow gate and waving people on like some spiritual traffic cop to the broad road that leads to damnation. counterfeit products

1. The Fake’s Fleece
Deuteronomy 13 Matthew 24:11,24, Rom 16:17 Jeremiah 5:31, “They prophesy falsely, and my people love to have it so.” Jeremiah 23:14, The number one enemy of the sheep in Palestine was the wolf, a natural enemy, roaming the hills, seeing a flock and at the precise right moment as it trailed the flock coming out of its hidden place and snatching that sheep and ripping it to shreds and a sheep utterly, totally defenseless against a wolf, defenseless
Shepherds for the most part, wore cloaks made of the wool of the sheep,’ do you see? The wool of the sheep when it was sheared was made into cloth for garments, the mark of a shepherd was he wore a wool cloak. The idea is not that he comes dressed like a sheep, the idea is that he comes dressed like a Shepherd!
2 Corinthians 11:13 For such people are false apostles, deceitful workers, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder! For Satan himself is disguised as an angel of light. 15 So it is no great thing if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their destiny will be according to their works.
Jude 4 “They creep in unawares.” “You can dot all your is and cross all your ts and still spell the word wrong.”

2. The Fake’s Fruit 2 Peter 2:1-3,19,20
A. The fake who perverts the gospel
Motive: Power and Pleasure 2peter 2:10-14, 2Tim 3:5-9, Eph 5:6.
B. The fake who profits from the gospel.
Motive: Fortune 2Peter 2:14 and with hearts trained in greed. Didachē.100 AD, Christemporos merchants.
C. The fake who protests against the gospel.
Motive: fame Actions: Displays 2John 7 Many deceivers have gone out into the world; they do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the antichrist. 8 Watch yourselves so that you don’t lose what we have worked for, but you may receive a full reward. 9 Anyone who does not remain in the teaching about Christ, but goes beyond it, does not have God. The one who remains in that teaching, this one has both the Father and the Son.

3. The Fake’s Fate
Matt 7:22 On that day many will say to Me, ‘Lord, Lord, didn’t we prophesy in Your name, drive out demons in Your name, and do many miracles in Your name?’ 23 Then I will announce to them, ‘I never knew you! Depart from Me, you lawbreakers!’ 2Peter 2 “If God didn’t spare the angels that sinned, but cast them to hell. And God didn’t spare the old world, the world of Noah, but drown them. And God didn’t spare Sodom and Gomorrah.”

5. The Father’s Fold
A. Continue on the Narrow Way. The passage is about those that would point you away from Christ.
B. Continue in the Word of God.
2Tim 3:14 “Continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them.” But as for you, continue in what you have learned and firmly believed, knowing those from whom you learned, 15 and that from childhood you have known the sacred Scriptures, which are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. Acts 20: 28 Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among whom the Holy Spirit has appointed you as overseers, to shepherd the church of God, which He purchased with His own blood. 29 I know that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. 30 And men from among yourselves will rise up with deviant doctrines to lure the disciples into following them. 31 Therefore be on the alert, remembering that night and day for three years I did not stop warning each one of you with tears. 32 “And now I commit you to God and to the message of His grace, which is able to build you up and to give you an inheritance among all who are sanctified.
